How green is your carpet? |
|||||
The recent COP17 conference and increasingly evident climate change has once again thrown the urgency for reform in global manufacturing and consumption patterns into the spotlight. The onus now falls on companies and governments to adopt environmental initiatives to educate the blissfully unaware on more responsible and sustainable practices. Flooring is no exception, and with an increased demand for greener carpets and materials, Belgotex Floorcoverings are taking their Green Journey very seriously. We take a closer look at the company’s green credentials.
As a member of the Green Building Council of South Africa, the company is fully committed to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, and in addition to complying with all applicable legislation, the Environmental Policy outlines its’ efforts to minimise pollution and seek out an ecologically sustainable waste management system for their Pietermaritzburg-based 155 000m² factory. The increased demand for greener materials (including flooring) resulted in the launch of the company’s ‘Eco Collection’ which includes Berber Point Eco and NexBac Eco backing containing a variable percentage of recycled content, Green Underlay made from 100% recycled yarn, Sportec Color rubber flooring made with 85% recycled car tyres and Grimebuster Ultra which is a rubber crumb backing made from 100% recycled car tyres. BERBERPOINT 920 NOW WITH RECYCLED CONTENT Nexus are proud to add ALL BerberPoint 920 carpets and NexBac Eco tiles to its Eco Collection. EVERY colour in the range contains recycled content (where BerberPoint Eco is only available in a limited range of colourways dictated by the percentage of recycled content). The ResinBac tiles and broadloom have recycled content in the face fibre, and NexBac Eco tiles contain recycled content in both the face fibre and backing...making it the ultimate “green” choice. With over 55 million square metres of BerberPoint 920 sold over the last 22 years, this represents a giant leap for “green carpeting”. 7 Colours In, 7 Colours Out
