Importance of colour

Colour plays a vital role in the choice of carpeting for you project. Not only does colour affect the ambience of a room, it also has a pivotal role in the moods of the people who pass through the room. Choosing the appropriate colour for you carpeting can help to convey your desired image to people who pass through the room. Whether it’s an office, shopping centre, hospital waiting area or restaurant it’s important to get the colour choice spot on.

Colours can be divided into the following groups – warm colours, cold colours, earth tones and accent and background colours.

Warm Colours

Red – is the colour of fire and blood so it’s a very emotionally intense colour. Red is associated with danger, power, passion and love. Red is used mainly as an accent colour to stimulate people to make quick decisions. Red can for example be used to indicate the pathway to an emergency escape

Yellow – stimulates the nervous system and mind. Yellow is associated with feelings of joy, happiness, intellect and energy. Yellow will brighten up any area and is therefore perfect choice for a paediatric ward or primary school. Be careful though, yellow can act as an irritant to the eye if overused

Orange – combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. Orange represents creativity, enthusiasm and success. Orange has a high visibility so is best used to catch attention or highlight important elements.

Cold Colours

Green – is the colour of nature and symbolises harmony, fertility and growth. Green relaxes the nervous system and is a calming colour. Dark green is an indicator of wealth. Green works well in the financial services & medical environments. Green relaxes the eye and makes rooms seem larger

Blue – is often associated with depth and stability. Blue symbolises loyalty, confidence and truth. Dark blue is a very masculine colour and is the preferred colour for most corporate companies. Although blue can make a room seem larger it can also create a cold and clinical feeling if overused

Purple – is a combination of blue and red. Symbolises nobility, royalty, power and ambition. In ancient times purple was difficult to come by as it was extracted from Purpura snails. It is thought that purple stimulates children’s imagination, so it is often used in areas frequented by children like a nursery school or doctors rooms.

Earth Tones

There are a large variety of earth tones brown, beige, cream and a variety of shades in between. It is the brown base of earth tones that creates their intimacy. Beige and tan colours are the more sophisticated colours cousins in this family. Although earth tones evoke a sense of tranquillity they can make a room look very muted if not mixed with other colours or textures.

Accent and Background Colours

Black – is a mysterious colour associated with elegance and power. Black contrasts very well with bright colours to create an aggressive and eye catching display. It is best used in large areas as it can make a room seem very small. Black is better when broken up with other colours, otherwise the effect is very serious

White – as with black, white is a great background or accent colour because it makes other colours look more vivid and bold. White used on it’s own creates a stark atmosphere and is generally associated with hospital wards.
